needed: pop bottles December 2, 2011

when i left home this morning it was cloudy but i didn’t think much of it.  it’s been grey out a lot lately.  but then when i was leaving campus mid-morning, it was raining.  my first thought: “i left my plastic bag at home!!”  i was terribly distraught and considered asking random students if they had an extra grocery bag on them but i’m too shy.  i considered buying a bag at a store i needed to go to but i’m too cheap.

in the end, i realized that my jacket was long enough for me to sit on the end of it and i didn’t get wet bum.  unfortunately, my jacket didn’t cover my legs so my thighs got wet from rain dropping down on them (plus a car that splashed me!) and the bottoms of my pants got soaked by the spray.

i had decided this past week that the next time i’m in toronto i’m going to go to mec and get myself some fenders for my bike.  then i chatted with sue!  she said that their family friend had the idea of using 2L pop bottles cut in half.

brilliant.

so now it’s your turn!  you can get involved too:

1/ i need pop bottles.  please.  this is a shout out to any kingstonian readers who drink pop.

2/ i need a mechanically-inclined friend to help me figure out a strategy for affixing the pop bottles in such a way that they’re secure and they sufficiently keep the spray down.

3/ i need some time to actually do it.  this isn’t something you can really help with, but it’s necessary as well.

not only do i reuse something formerly considered waste, but the bonus of having pop bottle fenders is that they will considerably decrease the appeal of my bike to thieves, which is an important factor in kingston.

oh yeah, and i look cool.
